Chapter Six

The wind whistling around the corner of the house blew through Nick’s hair and plastered his coat to his back. His partner would have called his stance passive-aggressive. His feet appeared to be planted firmly on the ground, but if he so much as smelled something he didn’t like or glimpsed somebody making one false move he would dive into action.

The adrenaline pumping through his body enabled him to see things more clearly, more quickly. Adrenaline or no adrenaline, he could hardly believe his eyes.

The strangely clad figures who had been peering through the windows stared at him and slowly put their hands in the air. “Is this a stick-up?” one called.

“My, he’s a handsome one, isn’t he?” the other said at the same time.

Nick pried his fingers from the butt of his gun and lowered his hand to his side. He wasn’t ready to say that neither of them was a threat to society, but he knew without a doubt that they weren’t a threat to Brittany or Savannah. They sure as hell weren’t Dawson. For one thing, they were women. They might have been eccentric and they were definitely heading down the other side of the hill called middle age, but they were women none the less. Not that he’d never come up against a woman who would sooner take a chunk out of his hide than look at him. These two didn’t seem to mind looking at him at all. In fact, one of them was ogling him as if he were a generous portion of peach pie à la mode.

“Sorry,” he said with a grimace. “I thought you were someone else.”

“Rats,” the shorter of the two grumbled. “I was hoping you’d frisk us.”

“Gussie!”

Batting fake eyelashes, the one named Gussie said, “Well I was. Are you one of the cowboys who advertised for women?”

Nick shook his head and held up both hands. He could face hardened criminals without flinching, but something about these two women gave him the urge to turn tail and run. From the looks of the rubies flashing on their chubby fingers, they were rich. Obviously they had no qualms about wearing real fur. A mink stole was wrapped around the taller woman’s neck. And—

He took a couple of steps closer. “Is that a coonskin cap?” he asked the one called Gussie.

She dragged it off her head and smoothed her hand over the tail. “Well, um, yes. Yes, it is.”

“I told you that folks out here don’t wear such monstrosities anymore,” the other woman admonished.

Brittany stepped out into the open. She’d heard the entire exchange, but she’d seldom seen a more helpless expression on Nick’s face. Striding toward the two women, who were still standing on the step leading to the old doctor’s study, she extended her hand. “I’m Brittany Matthews and I own this boarding house. Did I hear your friend call you Gussie?” she asked the woman clutching a coonskin cap.

Gussie nodded, but it was the taller woman who answered. “I’m Adeline O’Hare—you can call me Addie—and this is my sister, Gretchen.
